Life before streaming was difficult if you were a fan of anything that was made overseas. And no one felt this more acutely than Peter Jackson, the Lord of the Rings director from Aotearoa New Zealand. The director has a long and documented history as a Doctor Who fan, even making a video ten years ago teasing his turn directing an episode (that never ended up happening). But twenty years ago, before Doctor Who hit streaming, he had to get new episodes of the British sci-fi show from Steven Moffat himself.
In an interview with the podcast Half the Picture, Moffat recalled how he ended up being Peter Jackson's supplier of new Doctor Who episodes. "It was back in the days before things were transmitted through the air with special wifi gnomes or however it works. Once a Doctor Who episode [aired], I would make a disc for Peter Jackson, and send it to him by mail," Moffat began.
How did this all start? It came from a conversation that the two creators had about Who. "He was saying, 'It takes ages by rowing boat to New Zealand' or whatever we used in the pre-online era. So I said, 'Ah, I'll post them to you,'" Moffat offered.
Now, I am left wondering if Peter Jackson still has those discs that Moffat burned for him all those years ago. Physical media is important, kids.
