The official trailer for Disney Plus' live action adapation of Gene Luen Yang's seminal graphic novel American Born Chinese just dropped, and it gives us more of an idea about what direction the show will take, as it deviates from graphic novel format.

At Wondercon this year, Gene Luen Yang himself said that "The show is very very different from the book," and this trailer goes to show just how much its plot will deviate from the graphic novel, setting up a premise of our protagonist Jin Wang (Ben Wang) having to help a new schoolmate (Jimmy Liu) face some sort of supernatural uprising as the gates between Heaven and Earth open.

In the trailer we get a peek at recent Academy Award winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan. The show will also feature Chin Han, Daniel Wu, and Sydney Taylor as well as guest stars Stephanie Hsu, Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang, James Hong, Leonard Wu, and Poppy Liu.

The synopsis released by Disney for American Born Chinese reads: "Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, "American Born Chinese" chronicles the trials and tribulations of a regular American teenager whose life is forever changed when he befriends the son of a mythological god. This is the story of a young man’s battle for his own identity, told through family, comedy, and action-packed Kung-Fu."

American Born Chinese will debut on Disney+ on May 24.
