The return of DC’s Elseworlds was announced back at New York Comic Con 2023, and this June, it finally arrives with the first issue of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age… and a special surprise release, as well. Popverse has the exclusive details, and a sneak peek of the worlds to come.

When it comes to reviving the classic DC imprint, which reimagines classic DC icons in different settings and different genres, the publisher is going back to the very beginning. The first new series from the line will be Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age by Andy Diggle and Leandro Fernandez, a follow-up to the very first Elseworlds release of all, 1989’s steampunk reimagining of the Dark Knight, Gotham by Gaslight.

It’s possible that modern fans don’t remember that first release, however — it did happen 35 years ago! — which is why on the same day that Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #1 hits the stands, DC is also releasing a facsimile edition of the original book, reprinting the first adventure of the Batman of 1899 as he takes on Jack the Ripper, exactly as it originally appeared.

Then, in The Kryptonian Age, events get even bigger when a meteor crashes into the Midwest of the United States, leading to not only the first sightings of a feline-themed burglar, but also the debut of the world’s first superhumans…

Both Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #1 and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight #1 Facsimile Edition will be released June 11, with pre-orders for both titles opening March 15. We’ve got an exclusive look at the covers for The Kryptonian Age #1 (by Leandro Fernandez, Francesco Mattina, Jock, and Kendrick Lim) and Gotham by Gaslight #1, as well as two interior pages from The Kryptonian Age by Fernandez in the gallery below.

New York Comic Con is where you can explore an Artist Alley filled with hundreds of comic creators from legends like Jim Lee to up-and-coming talent. Commission unique art or get your personal collection signed October 17-20. Limited Thursday NYCC tickets are still on sale.
