For Magic: The Gathering fans like myself, there's always a thrill in seeing a new card - especially when it's rare and exclusive. And as a comics fan, it's always exciting when one of your favorite franchises jumps into the world of comics. Now, I'm about to experience both - and so are you.
Plans are afoot to bring the recent MTG manga Destroy All Humans. They Can't Be Regenerated from its native Japan to us here in North America - and for anyone outside of that who reads primarily in English. The manga giant VIZ Media has announced plans to translate and republish the recent serialized manga by writer Katsura Ise and artist Takuma Yokota in the latter half of 2024.
And as a bonus, VIZ Media is partnering with Wizards of the Coast for the print edition to include "an exclusive card." Wait, what? This isn't Secret Lair! There's no word yet on what this "exclusive card" could be - it could be as simple as a revised printing of a previous card, a previous card with new art, or it could be an entirely new card with new mechanics and new art. It's futile to hope for a Black Lotus, but maybe a Gaea's Cradle?
Unlike the recent U.S. Magic: The Gathering comics by BOOM! Studios, this Magic manga isn't set the Multiverse of the game itself - but is about MTG fans like you and I. Consider this Universes Beyond, into our universe.
Destroy All Humans. They Can't Be Regenerated is set in Japan in the '90s, and follows a middle school student named Hajime Kano who finds himself in a constant competition with honor student Emi Sawatari. Things change when Hajime visits a new game store and begins playing MTG.
Destroy All Humans. They Can't Be Regenerated goes on sale October 8, 2024. It is available for pre-order now on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
