Joe Kelly has written a lot of your favorite superheroes, and a lot of his. As he tells us, Spider-Man is his "all time" favorite, and he feels privileged to have written him as many times as he has in TV and comics, including what is essentially the pinnacle as the writer of Marvel Comics' Amazing Spider-Man series since April 2025. But here now in the shadow of the milestone Amazing Spider-Man #1000 releasing later this month, we asked him a frank question: where does he see his run ending?

"Partly, the answer is as long as they'll have me," Kelly tells Popverse. "Other than my own characters, he is my absolute favorite of all-time superhero. He's the character I grew up loving. I'm very proud to get to contribute at all to his legacy, and to get to tell stories in this universe with Spider-Man."

As we write this, Kelly has been on Amazing Spider-Man for almost a year-and-a-half, which is still very shy of his longest run: DC's Action Comics for five years. Kelly realizes the pressure of working on a book like Amazing Spider-Man, especially in times like these... but he does have what he says is a possible ending.

"I would like to be on for a while. I have what could be an endpoint," says Kelly. "I know where I'm writing towards, and all of these different things that I've introduced do actually come together in a sort of wacky way."

Kelly says that his Amazing Spider-Man run was planned to be very structured from the jump, and not just throwing "random spaghetti at the wall and be like, 'I'll deal with it later.'"

"I do have a sense of where these things are going. I'm hoping to be on for a while."

While Kelly's five-year Action Comics run totalled 50+ issues, the accelerated shipping schedule of Amazing Spider-Man is on pace to surpass that.

"If I'm on this book for three years, that would be 75 issues essentially. That would be a pretty awesome run," says the writer. "We'll see how it's going this time next year. And I'm sure that people will let me know how it's going, because certain people are very vocal out there about their Spidey opinions."

Amazing Spider-Man #1000 hits stores September 30, however, you can get it four days early if you shop at one of the participating Local Comic Shop Day retailers.
