Chasing Superman: Kevin Smith returns to DC to tell the "indefinite origin" of Bizarro

Kevin Smith turns Superman logic upside down with a Bizarro origin series

A long time ago (less if you're my age), writer/director/actor Kevin Smith (Dogma) was chosen to helm a reboot of the Superman movie franchise. The movie didn't get made and came crashing down in a spectacle you'd need CGI to reproduce these days, but after that, the idea of Kevin Smith doing a Superman project became one of the great missed moments. Now, he's getting that chance... sort of.

Kevin Smith is returning to DC for his first major work for the publisher in 14 years for Bizarro: Year None, a four-issue series taking on the carnival mirror version of Superman that is Bizarro. One part origin story, one part superhero comedy, all soaked in the stewy madness that is Bizarro logic. And while the comic isn't out until April 1 (seriously!), the humor of this is even permeating the press release DC used to announce this.

How?

They somehow got a quote from the... checks notes... entirely fictional Bizarro. "Me am NOT excited for new comic!" Bizarro is 'quoted' as saying in DC's press release. "Bizarro: Year None am worst thing to happen!"

Smith's Bizarro: Year None finds him partnering with co-writer Eric Carrasco (Supergirl, Masters of the Universe: Revelation) and artist Nick Pitarra (Manhattan Projects) - the latter of which seems like the bizarre kind of inspiration that can make a good pitch and script into a great comic..

Bizarro: Year None will be told from the perspective of the flustered-and-flustering comic duo of Daily Planet boss Perry White and jackass-of-all-trades Jimmy Olsen. Somehow, in this economy, they got the budget from Daily Planet's bosses to go into outer space, and that leads them to a mirror universe version of Metropolis that has recast the Daily Planet "as an article of faith." (I'd take that over L. Ron Hubbard any day!).

"As they unravel the mystery of this bizarre world, they confront the being behind it all," reads DC's description of the series. "Is he a misguided Superman fan, an agent of pure chaos, or is he no one at all?"

(Spoilers: he is simply Bizarro.)

This is actually Kevin Smith's second known attempt to work on Bizarro - years ago he was working on an animated short that would bring his ill-fated Superman actor Nicholas Cage back to DC as Bizarro, for a one-off episode of the cancelled TV DC anthology series Strange Adventures.

Wait, did I get sidetracked by giving out errant, semi-related information that had been hanging onto my brain like a barnacle for years with no place to put it? I did.

Anyway, here is a look at three of the planned five covers for Bizarro: Year None #1. These are the main cover by Pitarra, and variants by Ibrahim Moustafa and Frank Quitely. Yes, All-Star Superman's Frank Quitely.

Bizarro: Year None #1 (of 4) goes on sale April 1, with a plan to have all four issues out by July. It's just my thought, but maybe they are setting this up to be the Christmas gift of the 2026 season. Who doesn't want a little Bizarro in their stocking? But first, April Fool's Day.
