Who do you think of when you see Batman? For City of Madness writer/artist Christian Ward, it's Kevin Conroy - for his kindness
The writer of Batman: City of Madness and Two-Face had the same formative experience with Kevin Conroy's voice that we all did.

The thing about giving a performance as iconic as Kevin Conroy did with Batman is that it tends to transcend mediums. Sure, we also got to see him in video games and live-action, but Conroy’s role as Batman was so good that it has become the de facto voice for the Dark Knight for multiple generations of fans. Even comic book creators like Christian Ward have been influenced by Kevin Conroy’s voice performance over the years.
When Christian Ward, who has written Batman in comic book form with Batman: City of Madness and Two-Face runs, was asked about the voice that he hears when he writes the Caped Crusader, the answer was obvious. Kevin Conroy is the most prolific (and, if you ask us, best) Batman actor through the years, so, just like everyone born between 1980 and 2000, Ward hears his voice in his head when he is writing Batman dialogue. But it isn’t just Conroy’s massive body of work that has impressed Ward – it is also the subtleties of his Batman that have stuck with him.
“I think what I loved about [Kevin] Conroy,” Christian Ward said during his panel at MCM Comic Con 2025. “Is he was quite kind. Do you know what I mean? There was a kindness to him. Like, he could be quite rough when he needed to be and I think that’s what I loved about his take on Batman.”
There is never a bad time to praise Kevin Conroy’s performance as Batman. Even years after his death, he’s still the standard that all other Batman actors, in live-action, video games, or animation, are judged by.
Batman is the most well-known superhero in the world — surprisingly, given how much he loves hanging out in the dark. But between his comics, TV shows, movies, games, and more, DC's Dark Knight is the hero this city/country/world/universe needs, and we have all you need to enjoy him even more:
