Absolute Batman paves the way for DC to take risks, says Scott Snyder - unlike his New 52 Batman run
For Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder, the pressure of writing one of DC's best-selling books right now is different from when he was writing Batman during the New 52

Absolute Batman from Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta has been the gift that keeps on giving, for both DC Comics and Batman fans everywhere. Ever since the series first debuted in October 2024, the title has continued to pick up steam, bringing in new comic book readers each month to see where Gotham's biggest Dark Knight goes next.
During a recent edition of the Off Panel podcast, Snyder spoke about what it's been like to return to writing a Batman title, especially one as successful as Absolute Batman. Snyder noted that he felt a sense of pressure writing Absolute Batman, but it's a departure from what it was like writing Batman during DC's New 52 era back in 2011 through 2016.
"It's very different also from having been on Batman [the series]," he said. "Back then [during the New 52], it was like building a reputation, and really trying to just prove to yourself that you could make something you were proud of under all that stress. And that book was always this load-bearing book that had to sell a certain amount. It was just proving all these things to yourself."
The 2011 Batman series was certainly a load-bearing title; in addition to being the flagship comic book series starring DC's flagship character, Snyder and artist Greg Capullo's Batman would be the anchor series for the entire New 52 line and would spin off not only storylines such as 'Death of the Family' and 'Zero Year,' but also series including Talon and Batman: Eternal.
By contrast, "[Absolute Batman] is proving something to people out there, to DC internally that they already believed in and supported," the writer said. "It’s paving the way for us, not just this book, just the Absolute line in general, to be able to take the kinds of risks that I’m really excited to take this coming year."
Snyder went on to talk about the upcoming arc in Absolute Batman with Scarecrow, and I can't wait to see where Snyder and Dragotta go next.
Absolute Batman is available monthly from DC Comics.
