Frank Miller has believed that Superman and Batman’s friendship is “crazy” ever since he was a child

Frank Miller isn't a SuperBat believer, which is why he made Batman and Superman fight in The Dark Knight Returns

The Popverse coverage of the ComicsPRO Annual Meeting 2026 is brought to you by Lunar Distribution. Commited to Retailers. Focused on the Future of Comics.

There's a reason why Batman and Superman are called the World's Finest. They're one of the most iconic pairs in not just DC Comics, but American fiction, just generally. And as much as I love The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel working together, Frank Miller doesn't share the same enthusiasm towards this duo.

At ComicsPRO 2026, the writer of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns addressed why he had Batman and Superman fight in the story. And he made it clear that he's had qualms with the World's Finest since his earliest days on this Earth.

"When I was a child, and I would see World's Finest Comics come out, even then I'd say, 'This is crazy, these guys would never like each other.' And I knew I could build toward the crescendo of the animus between them [in The Dark Knight Returns]," Miller said.

Now, I can't get that image of a smaller, child version of Frank Miller (fedora included, of course) seeing an adorable World's Finest Comics cover, and just absolutely seething with every fiber of his being. I wasn't a child at the same time that Frank Miller was, and that's probably a good thing, because we definitely would have been beefing on the playground.

About ComicsPRO Industry Conference

Every year, the giants of the North American comic industry congregate behind closed doors for a closed-door conference to talk about the changing landscape of comics, what they've learned, and what they are all planning to do in the future. It's not a comic convention for fans, though - it's in a B2B event called the ComicsPRO Annual Meeting, and this year Popverse is going there to bring it all to you. At the 2026 Comics PRO Annual Meeting, Popverse will be covering the announcements, the conversations, and the insight from the likes of Marvel Comics, DC Comics, VIZ Media, Yen Press, Image Comics, Skybound Entertainment, and more.
