Superhero comics & movies aren't dead despite what trolls say, and DC architect Scott Snyder says Darkseid is a personification of anti-superhero trolls
Scott Snyder says Absolute Batman and DC K.O. were written in response to the Wall Street Journal and NYT publishing articles on superhero fatigue.

Scott Snyder doesn’t believe in superhero fatigue. While major media outlets are reporting on superhero films underperforming at the box office, Snyder is proving that the genre is thriving in the comic books. The Eisner Award-winning writer points to the success of Absolute Batman and DC’s All In publishing initiative.
“That was the conversation in the air when we did 'All In,'” Scott Snyder says during a panel at MegaCon 2026. “It was like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and all this stuff was exhausted. It was pre-Superman movie. And there was this feeling of superheroes are done. And there was this obit in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. They were all doing podcasts about how superheroes were over."
Scott isn't once to mince words, and called that whole line of thinking "bullshit."
"And I remember talking to Josh and Paul and people at DC and being like, ‘That’s bullshit. Like, there’s great stuff happening in comics," Snyder continues. "If we come back and we show them that you can do something like the 'New 52' with Absolute, and you really celebrate legacy and continuity and do them at the same time, we can show them they’re alive and well and having their best stories ever right now.’ And so that was the pitch.”
Snyder even included some meta-commentary in DC K.O., with Darkseid parroting some of the mainstream media’s talking points.
“Darkseid became the troll. He was like, ‘I’m going to level up and be the super troll and end all of you, and there should be no more superheroes.’ And so, it’s a story that’s really personal to us on a big level. It’s just saying over and over, comics are dead, superheroes are dead, you’re hanging onto something that’s done. But what you guys proved, and what retailers proved, when we went and did All In, everyone at DC, we were all nervous. When I did Absolute, I was like, ‘Am I driving DC into the iceberg.’ But the fact that you guys showed up the way you have and given us these last couple years, it’s so validating.”
