Everyone loves a good team-up, especially when two of the most notorious women in the DC Universe are involved. In a new miniseries called Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League from Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott, Cheetah and Cheshire link up to try to steal a powerful device that could make a world of a difference for the two villains. The only problem is is that it's stored in the Justice League Watchtower, just about the most secure facility in the DC Universe (well, aside from Amanda Waller's mind).
As exciting of a premise as that is, it's one that writer Greg Rucka needed to be convinced to board at first. On the podcast, The Sifu Mimi Chan Show, Rucka revealed how DC first approached him for the series. "I got a call from an editor at DC, Rob Levin, and he basically said, 'Here's this thing, and I want to do a story about [Cheetah and Cheshire] trying to steal it.' And I said, 'You can't. You can't do that, it's not going to work.' Because the problem is, Batman and Guy Gardner can hate each other's guts, but at the end of the day, they're all heroes. They're all going to be like, 'Well we have to save that life, we go to stop this catastrophe.' They're never going to stab each other in the back. And the problem with the villains is that that's all they do!
"...And Rob in the way that editors who have figured me out said, 'Yeah you're right, that's a real problem - how would you solve it?' And I said, 'Go fuck yourself,' and then called him back like three days later and said, 'Okay the way you do it is you do Ocean's 11, you do Ocean's 8.' So that's what we're doing," Rucka said.
So what is it that Cheetah and Cheshire are actually trying to steal? Rucka offered scant details, saying that there is a "device on The Watchtower that is the sort of device that only can exist in comic book continuity, and that is an exceptionally shortsighted solution to a problem that the heroes have come up with." So do with that what you will. Is it a Boom Tube? Orion's Mother Box? Personally, I would love to see Cheetah and Cheshire try to steal Orion's Mother Box, because I think that is one of the most perilous situations you could ever put yourself in in the DC Universe.
Either way, we'll find out more details once the first issue of Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League drops on August 6, 2025.
