DC relaunches 100 Bullets with original creators

The original creative team of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso are back in place for Lono's return to the US (and DC Vertigo) in 2026

It’s been more than a decade since Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso delved into the underworld of DC Vertigo’s best-selling (and critically acclaimed!) 100 Bullets — but, just as DC Vertigo itself returns in 2026, so too will Azzarello and Risso, with the newly announced 100 Bullets: The US of Anger.

The creators behind the beloved series — which initially ran for 100 issues between 1999 and 2009, and spawned a sequel in the shape of 2014’s eight-issue 100 Bullets: Brother Lono series — will be reuniting for the timely new storyline, in which former Minuteman Lono (who may or may not be a better man, as Brother Lono revealed) returns to the U.S. and “reignites chaos, taking the nation’s darkest impulses to their violent extremes,” as per DC. So, you know… expect a laid back, chill storyline that definitely isn’t going to tie in with current events whatsoever.

It may have been more than a decade since Azzarello and Risso worked on 100 Bullets, but the bigger surprise may be that the two are returning to 100 Bullets and DC at all; as recently as last year, Azzarello told Popverse “there’s no room for me there [at DC],” adding, “I just think that the kind of books that they want to publish, and how they want to treat those characters, that's not me anymore.” Of course, DC Vertigo is intentionally a return to creator-owned comic books for the publisher — and creator-led comic books in general, and Azzarello is glad to see it: he likened the return to "coming home" during the NYCC 2025 DC Vertigo - We're Back panel.

100 Bullets: The US of Anger is one of nine new series as the launch slate for the new DC Vertigo relaunch, alongside a new horror series from the beloved Hellblazer creative team of Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell and seven all-new concepts and the return of ames Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno’s The Nice House by the Sea. The relaunch of DC Vertigo was first announced at NYCC 2024.

More information about 100 Bullets: The US of Anger, and the new DC Vertigo slate, will be released in the coming months.
