DC reunites Hellblazer team for horror book in Vertigo relaunch

Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell are reuniting for A Walking Shadow, launching from DC Vertigo in 2026

Si Spurrier and Aaron Campbell is a creative team that’s already won over fans (and critics, with a British Fantasy Award nomination in 2021!) with their work together on DC Black Label’s Hellblazer and Hellblazer: Dead in America. In 2026, the two are re-teaming for an all-new, original horror story for DC’s reborn Vertigo imprint.

Announced during the NYCC 2025 DC Vertigo - We’re Back panel moderated by executive editor Chris Conroy, Spurrier and Campbell will be creating A Walking Shadow, a new series the publisher describes with the following, purposefully foreboding, text: “Eight strangers wake up chained to a boat in the woods. No memory. No escape. No explanation.”

Suitably vague, sure, but given the quality of the pair’s Hellblazer collaboration, not much more needs to be said — and, as is the case for horror stories, the less that’s known, the better going in. The teaser was accompanied by a suitably disturbing promo image by Campbell, which looks like this:

A Walking Shadow will be part of the launch slate for DC Vertigo, which officially begins in February 2026 with the first new issue of James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno’s The Nice House by the Sea in a year; it’s one of nine new series forming an imprint re-establishing DC Vertigo as a home for genre-agnostic mature-readers storytelling at DC. The relaunch of DC Vertigo was first announced at NYCC 2024.

More information about A Walking Shadow, and the new DC Vertigo slate, will be released in the coming months.
