Iron Man is off to a new start in Marvel Comics, with a series from Joshua Williamson and Carmen Carnero that kicked off in late January. Sometime in the future, however, writer Chip Zdarsky would love the chance to write an Iron Man book, instead of incorporating him as a supporting character in another hero's solo series.
On the Near Mint Condition podcast, Zdarsky revealed the specific conundrum he faces when it comes to writing Iron Man. As it turns out, Zdarsky loves to write him because he's a "big personality" and that he "always like[s] to write people that would have great dialogue." Luckily for all of us, Zdarsky stated that Iron Man is going to have a part to play in the upcoming Avengers Armageddon story this summer.
But everything isn't always sunshine and rainbows. “Whenever I put Tony in a book I get shit online, because he’s usually the antagonist," Zdarsky began. "He comes in and Cap[tain America] has to set him straight, or Spider-Man has to set him straight, Daredevil has to set him straight. You play him up a bit more as maybe the guy who isn’t right in that situation, because he’s a secondary character. But if I were to write Tony in his own comic, it would be a different version," Zdarsky assured.
My fellow comic book fans, let's also remember that there can't be a story without conflict. And some of the most compelling conflicts in comics and beyond come from beloved characters like Tony Stark beefing with other beloved characters. And, frankly, it's realistic that superheroes would occasionally have antagonistic moments with each other. If I were to ever be wrong about something, I'd want my friends to take me aside and set me straight, and I'd want them to not hate me forever for it, too.
Anyways, I would love to see a Chip Zdarsky-penned Iron Man book, Marvel. And a cover drawn by him, if he's up for it too.
