Marvel Comics plans to make Cyclops into the new Wolverine (at least in terms of comic book stardom)

While Wolverine has been Marvel’s number one mutant for generations now, that wasn’t always the case. Wolverine was firmly a supporting character in the X-Men until his 1982 limited series pushed him into the comic book spotlight. Now, Tom Brevoort is hoping to do the same with the Cyclops, giving the often-overlooked leader of the X-Men the star treatment he’s deserved for years now.

As announced during the New York Comic Con 2025 X-Men panel, Tom Brevoort has said that he’s trying to make Cyclops as beloved as Wolverine during the upcoming limited series. “I’m super excited about this book… The intention with this was to do for Cyclops, was to do a Cyclops story that was the equivalent of the original Wolverine limited series that tells you everything you need to know about this guy in one story,” Brevoort said.

He also dropped some plot details for the 2026 mini-series. “And so the book is, Cyclops, he’s in a plane crash. His visor is shattered. He’s got a young mutant that he’s gotta protect and shepherd to safety as they are hunted through the woodlands by the Reavers. It’s super cool, and I can’t wait for you guys to take a look at it.”

The creative team for the series is writer Alex Paknadel and X-Men series artist Roge Antonio.

The Wolverine limited series was first published in 1982, written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Frank Miller and Terry Austin. It gave us many of the character’s most iconic features, such as his relationships with the X-Men and his connection to Japanese culture. It helped make the character one of the most popular X-Men, something that Brevoort and Marvel are hoping to replicate with 2026’s Cyclops series.

Cyclops #1 launches February 2026.
