Marvel hated the idea of Elektra dying in Frank Miller's Daredevil; here's how he convinced them to let him do it

Daredevil writer Frank Miller recounted how Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter gave him "sad eyes" when he told him Elektra was going to die

Elektra may be alive and well today, but her death in Frank Miller's Daredevil was a shocking moment that continues to haunt the psyches of comic book fans everywhere. The deadly assassin had reinvigorated the Daredevil mythos in Marvel Comics, and for the first time in years, gave Marvel readers a reason to run to their local comic shop every month to buy Daredevil. So who in their right mind would decide to kill her off? Frank Miller, of course.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Frank Miller talked about how he broke the news of his plans to kill off Elektra to the editorial bullpen at Marvel. "I was pulled toward an inevitable climax. And [Elektra] just plain had to die, which was quite a big and controversial decision, which my editor simply said 'no' to... And I said, 'Well, why not?' And I proved to him - and it was Denny O’Neil, who was an accomplished writer. And I said, 'But no, here’s why it’s got to happen, Denny.' And he said, 'Now, look, [Marvel editor-in-chief Jim] Shooter won’t let us do that... He just would [say] that Elektra is now more popular than Daredevil. So he’s not going to let us kill him,'" Miller began.

"And so I walked down the Shooter’s office and I told Shooter the situation, and Shooter looked at me very sadly and he said, 'But she’s more popular than him.' And I said, 'Yeah, but it’s got to happen because otherwise she’s going to be an insipid character. And so it’s terrible.' And he looked at me with sad eyes, and he said, 'Tell me a story, Frank.' And I told him in detail the climax of the Elektra saga. And his face brightened, and he said, 'This is great. We’ll end it in a double-sized issue," Miller said.

Elektra ended up dying in Daredevil #181, at the hands of Bullseye. It wouldn't be the last time that Bullseye would kill one of Daredevil's love interests, either. We're still mourning the death of Karen Page here at Popverse, even though that happened all the way back in 1999.
