When Marvel Comics hired Frank Miller, he didn't have his eye on Daredevil or Wolverine - rather, he wanted to handle Spider-Man

Frank Miller may have rescued Marvel Comics' Daredevil from obscurity, but the writer-artist admits that he would have loved to work on Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man instead

Frank Miller's run on Daredevil is widely seen as a transformational time for Marvel Comics' Man Without Fear. Drawing and then writing Daredevil provided a launchpad for a young Frank Miller, who was looking to expand into the field of superhero comics in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Now, part of the reason why Miller was put on a bi-monthly book that wasn't selling well, like Daredevil, was because Marvel wasn't keen on handing the keys to their most valuable properties to someone without a proven track record. But if he had the chance to do it all over again, Miller wouldn't necessarily have chosen Daredevil for himself, he's recently revealed.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Mark Evanier asked Frank Miller if he had the chance to time-travel back to when he first boarded Marvel Comics, which character would have asked Jim Shooter to let him work on. "Spider-Man," Miller said. However, Evanier replied, "Knowing that if you did Spider-Man, you’d be one of eight guys doing the Spider-Man at the same time," which made Miller reconsider his decision. "Yeah, maybe it wouldn’t have been Spider-Man. No, no, I might have wanted a less visible character, too."

Part of why Miller flourished on Daredevil was because he had less baggage and expectations to contend with, unlike Marvel's more popular characters like Spider-Man. That said, Miller did have the opportunity to do some work on Spider-Man books here and there in the early days of his career, like Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #27 and #28 from 1979. So it all worked out for the best.
