If you've walked into a comic book shop within the past 5 years, there's a good chance that you saw at least one cover drawn by artist Peach Momoko. Momoko's signature ink and watercolor style has made her one of the most beloved comic book artists of her generation. But as the writer-artist on Ultimate X-Men, Momoko has proven herself as a powerhouse writer as well.
Speaking to Popverse, Momoko revealed some of the challenges that came with both writing and drawing Ultimate X-Men each month, as well as the joys that came with working on the series. In case you missed it, Ultimate X-Men will be ending in early 2026 with Ultimate X-Men #24.
“Everything was a challenge. Remembering what information I told in the past months, remembering each character’s own timeline position… and sometimes it would take me a week to create a story (and rough interior art), and find out that the story doesn’t make sense or drags…so I would have to scrap the entire story and start from scratch. So sometimes I had to create multiple stories before feeling good about it. Then that creates a big deadline issue. But because I do not want to be late, I just have to concentrate harder and longer to hit the monthly deadline," Momoko wrote in an email.

Just writing or drawing a monthly comic book series for Marvel comes with a ton of pressure, and Momoko's work ethic is inspiring. But this sense of inspiration isn't a one-way street: she also loves seeing how fans have embraced her story.
“Just to make even the tiniest scratch in the history of Marvel Comics is enough of a reward to me. But for me, seeing the fans bring me the comic to sign, tell me their favorite character, cosplay, draw fan art, talk about it amongst their peers…that is the biggest reward," wrote Momoko.
