"One cool element" from Star Wars Expanded Universe to be "remixed and remastered" back into canon with Marvel's new Star Wars comic

A second chance at a sequel to Return of the Jedi will arrive in Marvel's new Star Wars comic book series, with one "cool element" from the original Expanded Universe set to return

On August 25, 2014 there was a great disturbance in Star Wars continuity, as if millions of stories suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. What I'm talking about is Disney's decision to eliminate all the stories from Star Wars continuity that came from the comic books, the prose novels, the games, and even some TV series and spinoff films. Those stories were known as the Star Wars Expanded Universe (abbreviated as EU), and were later redubbed as non-canon stories called Star Wars Legends. Some of those characters and stories were later cribbed back into canon such as Lars Mikkelsen's Thrawn (as seen in Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka), but many many more stories remain in a galaxy far, far away from Star Wars canon even.

But in this months new Star Wars comic book series set in-continuity just after Return of the Jedi, writer Alex Segura (who has written numerous Star Wars canon novels & comics) says that something he loved from the Star Wars EU is returning - in a way.

"I wouldn’t say we cribbed [from the Star Wars Expanded Universe], but there’s certainly one cool element from the past you might see remixed and remastered by the end of #1," Segura tells Popverse's Leon Miller.

The Star Wars EU flourished in comics just after Return of the Jedi with 1991's Star Wars: Dark Empire, then a sequel to Return of the Jedi the same as Segura and Phil Noto's new Star Wars comic is now.

"Growing up as a fan of the Original Trilogy, I was always hopeful for a trilogy that would take place shortly after Return of the Jedi. Since that didn’t happen, it’s been a lot of fun coming up with visuals for a comic version of that era," Noto tells Popverse. "There’s also been a lot of additional world-building with Rogue One, Andor, and The Mandalorian which has helped anchor some designs and environments. I have also been trying to make it all look a bit ‘80s-ish as if this was produced as a movie in 1986 or so. Nothing too slick or futuristic."

Launching May 7, Segura & Noto's Star Wars comic is set one year after the Return of the Jedi and immediately in the wake of the end of the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku.
