The darkest Superman variant, Superboy Prime, is back for redemption, and he's a big fan of those DC Absolute comics

Superboy Prime is out to save Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes... but can we trust him?

Superman is a paragon for hope and humanity inside DC Comics and kinda in our own real-world, but in the vagaries of the DC Multiverse, there's a Superman variant who is anything but. In many ways, he's a Superman fan gone wrong because he's written as a Superman fan gone wrong, and he wants you to call him Superboy Prime.

During the DC All In - What's Next panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2025 just now, Superman writer Joshua Williamson revealed that the character will be a big part of the current 'Legion of Darkseid' arc. He returned in this week's Superman #28 by Williamson and Mora; we would've told you before now, but spoilers. Williamson, however, doesn't mind spoilers.

"Superboy Prime has kind of had a redemption arc," says Williamson, and is "a big fan of the Absolute Universe.

In the current 'Legion of Darkseid' storyline, it's revealed that Darkseid has been hopping from universe to universe, either killing off the superhero team of the future in Legion of Super-Heroes or subverting them to work for him as part of the Omega Legion. So, whose side is Superboy Prime on? He says the good guys, but we'll see.

"Oh yeah, I'm back, dear readers," Superboy Prime tells us in the final page of Superman #28, breaking the Fourth Wall. "You better be here next month to watch me save Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes... I smell an event coming!"

That event would be the upcoming DC K.O. event.
