Marvel’s Wolverine game is getting a secret prequel comic which is quietly debuting at San Diego Comic-Con

The Wolverine game is getting a prequel as a comic book - and I hope it's 'Red Band' so it can show all the blood from the game.

The upcoming Wolverine game is one of the most highly anticipated games of 2026 (behind just GTA 6), and its developer, Insomniac Games, is known to have a very tight relationship with Marvel Comics, having worked on the Spider-Man games in the past. That relationship is so tight that Marvel has secretly developed an official prequel to the Wolverine game it is releasing in just two weeks at Comic-Con International: San Diego.

Marvel Comics will be handing out copies of an official Wolverine game prequel comic at one of its SDCC booths (#2329). They're also giving out sets of Wolverine claws from the games, but the comic is even more enticing because, for now, this will be the only place to get this comic, and it's written by the game's narrative director Walt Williams.

Neither Marvel nor Insomniac has said who is drawing the book.

With the Wolverine game coming out on September 15, this SDCC-exclusive Wolverine prequel comic seems to be sneaking up to become the hottest comic of San Diego - and probably the hardest to get.

The Wolverine game is described as a solo adventure set three years after he quit Marvel's mutant team - called X-Team (not X-Men) in this universe. He's brought back into the fold when longtime Marvel villain Bolivar Trask and his cronies (including Sentinels) begin kidnapping mutants.

In addition to this Wolverine prequel comic, the ongoing Wolverine comic series will have a special homage variant to Larry Hama's iconic Wolverine #75 cover, and that comes out later this year.

Marvel's Wolverine game is set for release on September 15 as a Sony PlayStation 5 exclusive.

Wolverine’s history explained: The complete timeline of Wolverine’s life, his greatest loves, his deaths, his resurrections, his children, and more.
