As crazy as it might seem, we’re less than a year away from the release of the third Deadpool movie — which will also mark the first official crossover between Fox’s X-Men movie universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following in the footsteps of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. But… what even is Deadpool 3, and why do we keep seeing Hugh Jackman getting involved in it? We’re glad you asked. Here’s everything we know about the movie so far.

Who is in the Deadpool 3 cast?

Of course, Ryan Reynolds is returning as Wade Wilson in this third outing for the character; it’s almost impossible to imagine a Deadpool movie without him at this point. He’ll be joined by a number of other actors returning to the series:

  • Morena Baccarin as Wade’s fiancée Vanessa
  • Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead
  • Leslie Uggams as Blind Al
  • Karan Soni as Dopinder
  • Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio
  • Rob Delaney as Peter
  • Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus

That’s not all, however. In a video released on Ryan Reynolds' Twitter account in 2022, Reynolds speaks to the audience about how hard he and his team has been working on the new Deadpool movie-- the first to enter the MCU. "Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart... and I have nothing," he confesses to the audience.

That is, before he drops the bomb, "But we did have one idea," he says, addressing... Hugh Jackman who is walking across the background. "Hey Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?"

"Sure, Ryan," Jackman says after a short pause and before ascending a staircase.

As if that wasn’t enough, it’s since emerged that Jennifer Garner will be reprising her role as Elektra for the first time since 2005 in the movie, as well.

Wait, Hugh Jackman is in Deadpool 3?

Yes, indeed. A day after the announcement that he was starring in the movie, we were graced with yet another comedic video, this time with Hugh Jackman starring alongside Reynolds. In this video they promise information about timelines and how Wolverine actually comes to be in the film, but of course, their dramatic interpretation is drowned out by the boppy tones of Wham!'s 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.' This explanation is followed by some photographs over the years of Ryan Reyolds and Hugh Jackman's fabled friendship.

Watch the video below. Any lip readers out there?

Jackman has since shared an image of himself in a Wolverine costume that looks closer to the comic book incarnation of the character on social media, finally fulfilling fans dreams after decades.

Who is responsible for Deadpool 3?

The first draft of Deadpool 3 was written by Bob’s Burgers veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, who signed on to the project in November 2020; in early 2022, it was reported that original franchise writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick would rewrite the screenplay, and that Shawn Levy would direct the movie. Zeb Wells, who’s previously worked on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and the upcoming The Marvels, is also working on the screenplay alongside Reynolds and Levy.

Is there a poster for Deadpool 3?

As of writing, there isn’t a poster for Deadpool 3.

Is there a trailer for Deadpool 3?

As of writing, there isn’t a trailer for Deadpool 3, although there are the teaser videos announcing Jackman’s involvement as seen above.

What is Deadpool 3 about?

The plot of Deadpool is a mystery, although some fascinating details have been revealed already. The movie is part of the MCU, with appearances by the Time Variance Authority from the Loki Disney+ series rumored — something that would make sense, considering that the movie seems to be some kind of multiversal adventure considering the involvement of Reynolds, Jackman and Garner. Could this be the R-rated Across the Spider-Verse/Flash/Crisis on Infinite Earths parody that fans have been waiting for? (Have fans been waiting for something like that? Possibly.)

When will Deadpool 3 be released?

Deadpool 3 will hit theaters on July 26, 2024. It was previously scheduled for release on May 3, 2024.
