The creature that killed Superman is returning — and he’s quite literally mad as hell about it.

August will see the release of Action Comics Presents: Doomsday Special #1, a 48-page one-shot that doesn’t just bring back Doomsday, but also features an unlikely partnership coming together to make sure that he doesn’t return from the underworld any more dangerous than he’s previously been, as Supergirl teams with the Martian Manhunter to try and deal with the threat before it gets to be too much for anyone to handle. Will they succeed…? That won’t be seen for a few months, but it’s worth noting that this issue is being teased to lead into the next big Superman storyline…

The special issue comes from the creative team of Dan Watters and Eddy Barrows, with covers from Björn Barends, Puppeteer Lee, Lucio Parrillo, Clayton Crain, and classic Superman: Man of Steel artist Jon Bogdanove. Check out a gallery of all covers below.

DC’s official description of the issue reads, “It is a creature beyond reason—and the only force in the universe strong enough to kill Superman. It’s Doomsday, the living embodiment of death, destruction, and evolution! In the wake of Dark Crisis and Lazarus Planet, King Doomsday now sits on a throne of skulls across a river of blood, holding court over the demons that swarm in the depths of Hell...and he may have just found a way back to the land of the living. It’s now up to Supergirl and Martian Manhunter to drive the beast back and see that he never again returns to our earthly plane—even if they must die to do it! Plus: the return of Bloodwynd, the debut of the Doomhounds, and a clue to the next big Superman event! “

(Anyone who isn’t oddly excited by the prospect of Bloodwynd coming back after all these years, I’m very disappointed in all of you.)

Action Comics Presents: Doomsday Special #1 is set for release August 29.

Dan Jurgens, the man behind the creature that killed Superman remembers the comic book event that shook the world, three decades on.
