4:LOOP is a game made specifically for Risk of Rain sickos like me

4:LOOP game director Mike Booth describes it as "endless, replayable chaos" which is the magic words to me.

If you’re itching to get back into a procedurally generated shooter like Risk of Rain, then I’ve got good news for you; 4:LOOP looks like it will scratch that particular itch. Based on the gameplay trailer shown at last night’s Sony State of Play presentation, I’m feeling good about the healthy dose of unpredictable chaos that the developers at Bad Robot Games are promising.

Announced last December, 4:LOOP is a four-player co-op shooter where players join forces to fight off an alien invasion. The unique aspect of the game is that aliens drop loot, which can be equipped and used in different ways, with each weapon interacting with others to create chaotic combinations. According to the game’s director, Mike Booth, the idea is to create a game where every playthrough is different.

That system, of getting different weapons and items in procedurally generated levels, will be very familiar to fans of Risk of Rain and its sequel, Risk of Rain 2. This isn’t a dig at 4:LOOP or Bad Robot Games, mind you. I sunk an inordinate amount of time into Risk of Rain 2 with my friends, so getting the opportunity to do so again is not something I want to pass up. The promise of “endless, replayable chaos” is exactly what I want from these types of games. The addition of different mission objectives is a fun wrinkle to the formula.

We still don’t have a release date for 4:LOOP, which is still in pre-beta as of February 2026, so it will likely be a long time before we get to see if it delivers on the chaotic promises of this first gameplay trailer.
