"The lovable animal sidekick" is probably one of the best tropes in modern fantasy. Whether we're talking about Bill the Pony from The Lord of the Rings, Ghost in Game of Thrones, or Tony Tony Chopper in One Piece, it's just more fun to have a fuzzy friend along for the ride as you journey to lands unknown. The animal companions of Critical Role are no exception, and it appears that the folks at their publishing house, Darrington Press, are well aware of this fact.
At least, we're pretty sure that's why they're publishing a card game about them.
That card game would be A Familiar Find, heading to stores everywhere this spring and starring some of the most iconic fuzzy/furry/feathery friends to ever be a part of Critical Role's ever-expanding universe of Exandria. Players get the chance to roleplay as The Legend of Vox Machina's Trinket the Bear, Bells Hells' Little Mister and Pâté de Rolo, or a number of other titular familiars in a race to gather spellcasting ingredients for their favorite magicians.
Described as a "charming, fast-paced, and strategic adventure," in Darrington's own game announcement, we can't help but feel that A Familiar Find takes inspiration from the ultra-popular cozy gaming trends of today, particularly in its positively plushy protagonists. That said, we don't want to undersell the cunning the game seems to require, as Darrington clarifies players will have to "Hide your intentions, choose the perfect moment to reveal ingredients, and outplay your opponents when it counts" in order to win.
Check out the game's trailer to learn more.
Darrington Press's A Familiar Find comes to game shops everywhere April 7. You can pre-order it here.
With two animated series on Prime Video, Campaign 4 in full swing, and so much more Exandrian lore to come, Critical Role is showing no signs of slowing down. That's why the adventuring party at Popverse are here to bring you everything we can from those nerdy-ass voice actors & Bo., including:
- How to watch Critical Role in order
- Travis Willingham on the differences between The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein
- Taliesin Jaffe on playing Mollymauk Tealeaf for Campaign 2 vs. playing him for Prime Video
- Matt Mercer's homebrew warrior class (created originally for Vin Diesel)
...and much, much more. Roll initiative, player. Magic awaits.
