Spoilers for Critical Role Campaign 4 follow. 

I don't know if it's the main theme, but one of the major ideas at the heart of Critical Role's Campaign 4 is revolution. Maybe even more specifically - it's a campaign about what revolutions do to people on a personal level. At the center of the discussion is Thjazi Fang, the revolutionary whose execution set off the events of C4. And while some mourned Thjazi as a hero, there were others - including Bolaire Lathalia - who had less favorable feelings about him.

And recently, Bolaire's creator Taliesin Jaffe got into exactly what those feelings were.

Jaffe was speaking with Temple of Geek's Caitlin Tyrrell alongside costar Luis Carazo when the subject of Bolaire's opinion of Thjazi came up. As someone who has seen so much darkness, Tyrell inquired of Jeff, how does Bolaire view the revolutionary leader?

"Bolaire's standpoint is always interesting," The Mighty Nein voice actor began, "Because it's from such an inhuman space. Even the notion of, 'a good man' is, I think, very performative for him. I would say he knows that he's a cruel man."

"Cruel" is perhaps even putting it mildly. As you'll recall if you've been keeping up with Campaign 4, it was revealed that Thjazi had been blackmailing Bolaire into acting as a kind of magic consultant by threatening to reveal Bolaire's secret - that he is, in fact, a sentient mask only faking humanity.

"From a larger sense," Jaffe continued, "And I'm probably going to steal this out of Luis's mouth here - there comes a point when someone is a revolutionary, or someone has something they believe in so passionately, and an idea that they've devoted themselves to, that it is inevitable that you are going to become a monster. And [Tjazi] is a monster. He is an extremely righteous monster, in my opinion. You don't become a revolutionary figure without betraying everyone you've ever known and loved."
