Following Baldur's Gate 3's success, the next Dungeons & Dragons video game has been announced - but Wizards of the Coast couldn't get Larian Studios to do it
Giant Skull was founded by the director of the Star Wars Jedi series and God of War III, so it seems like the follow-up to Baldur's Gate 3 is going to be more action focused than we might expect.

How do you follow up on one of the biggest gaming releases in recent years? For Wizards of the Coast, owners of Dungeons & Dragons, it means moving past the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 and into something new. The company announced that the next single-player game based on the iconic D&D property is currently in development – and not with Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios.
It is the news that we’ve been expecting for a while now. Larian Studios has made it clear that they don’t have much interest in following up Baldur’s Gate 3 with DLC or a sequel, despite it being a massive hit for the studio. This meant that Wizards of the Coast and their parent company Hasbro needed to find someone else to help them capitalize on the renewed interest in the game from players around the world.
That new studio is Giant Skull, a studio that was founded last year by God of War III and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director Stig Asmussen after he parted ways with Respawn Entertainment. Details around the game are still tightly under wraps, but it sounds like the next Dungeons & Dragons video game won’t be the turn-based fare that the original game and Baldur’s Gate 3 were based on. Instead, they may be more action-based and feature a more linear story. That is a huge departure from what made Larian Studio’s game so unique but Asmussen and Giant Skull clearly have a knack for making big, memorable stories.
No release date or title has been confirmed for the next single-player Dungeons & Dragons game from Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull.
