Want a Chrono Trigger remake or remaster? Square Enix hears you, especially longtime Final Fantasy art director Hiroshi Minagawa

I believe Chrono Trigger is the greatest JRPG of all time, so what is the hold up?

I haven’t been shy about my belief that Chrono Trigger is ripe for a remake, giving players on modern consoles a chance to play the greatest JRPG of all time. However, I’m not alone in that belief, as even many of the developers at Square Enix itself know that there is a market out there for more Chrono Trigger, including the director of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles himself.

This was a conversation that happened recently when I talked to Kazutoyo Maehiro at Seattle's PAX West, along with art director Hiroshi Minagawa, about the impending release of the Final Fantasy Tactics remake. When I mentioned that my most anticipated remake would be Chrono Trigger, Maehiro agreed with me.

“Yeah, Chrono Trigger is obviously such a popular game, and I know there’s a ton of fans worldwide,” Maehiro said through a translator. “We did put it out on Steam at one point, but it was more of a port than a remaster, but even so, when that came out, we heard even more people talking about, ‘Hey, we want more than this. We want a full remake or remaster treatment.’”

Proving himself a person of exceptional taste, Maehiro added, “I myself am a big fan of the game as well, so I think, from that perspective too, I would really love to see it happen.”

Clearly, Square Enix knows that we’re all eager to get our hands on a new, updated version of Chrono Trigger, which begs the question of what fans need to do to make it happen.
