It’s hard enough to fight enemies and bosses in video games. You shouldn’t have to fight gender stereotypes too.

Briana White, who voices Aerith Gainsborough in the Final Fantasy video game franchise, is thankful that her character doesn’t have to fight these battles. In fact, one of White’s favorite parts of the Final Fantasy VII Remake is the friendships between the female characters.

“I was scared at first that we were going to be pitted against each other like catty females because to a certain degree, video games have evolved, but sometimes not,” White says during a panel at Florida Supercon.

“Stereotypes still exist. Tropes still exist, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but I think it is a great joy to be able to portray something a little bit different, new, modern, wholesome, and realistic. I mean, these girls are saving the world together. They are not thinking of jealousy or hitting each other. They’re a team. They’re working together. I would think that’s realistic.”

After all, gaming is always more fun when you have friends by your side.
