Final Fantasy XIV is still Square Enix's biggest active hit, but its boss says he's aware fans believe the game is withering out

Square Enix boss says he's "aware" of growing fan displeasure over the MMO Final Fantasy XIV, but says the new expansion will fix it.

The MMO Final Fantasy XIV has been a hit for the past 12 years, and has become the best-selling FF game of all time... but some fans are starting to see the long-running game as faltering. While not saying if its true or not, the concern has reached such a level that Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu was asked about it - and answered it.

"We are aware of it," Kiryu said, according to a translated report from Japanese investment reporter Yuzz on X.. "The development team is doing its utmost to ensure that people continue to enjoy the game after 8.0."

The "8.0" is an upcoming major expansion planned - its first since 2024's Dawntrail expansion, which received a rather mixed reception compared to previous additions to the game

"This being a game, it's a form of entertainment, and you'll always see some form of mixed response to entertainment," Dawntrail director Naoki Yoshida told PC Gamer back in August. "A second factor is that with Endwalker, we reached a big climax to a long-standing, spanning story. To a certain extent I had already predicted that we would have some sort of mixed response this time.

"So If the question is whether I was shocked in a big way, the answer is no, not really."

Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu is aware of concern that Yoshida may be distracted by the multiple other projects he's working on besides Final Fantasy XIV and that that could lead to weakness with the game, but he pushes back and believes the director's other work will actually help FF XIV as a whole.

According to recent financial reports from Square Enix, its MMO games - with FF XIV as its centerpiece - remain the company's largest source of income - and grew compared to its 2023 numbers.

Here's how to play all the Final Fantasy games in order.
