A string of comedic YouTube videos in the 2000s called Master Chief Sucks at Halo depicted a Master Chief action figure playing Halo on an Xbox controller not much larger than him, playing very poorly while talking trash to opponents in an affectless robot voice with hilarious results. But the thing is, Master Chief does suck at Halo in real life, voice actor Steve Downes says at FAN EXPO Chicago.
"There used to be a thing on YouTube, I don't think it's there anymore, but it used to be a YouTube series called Master Chief Sucks at Halo. It's based on a true story," Downes says.
An audience member asked if the voice actors at a Fan Expo Chicago panel on Halo had played the popular militaristic sci-fi combat game, especially the first three games, to get a feel for their characters to better embody them. Tim Dadabo, who voices 343 Guilty Spark in the Halo series, says also has had his struggles playing the popular first-person shooter game.
"I was playing live with a friend of mine who was also a client and I was sucking it up, just sucking it up," Dadabo says.
A kid "from God knows where" was talking trash. It got so bad that Dadabo's friend had to intervene.
"Dude, do you know who you're playing against right now," Dadabo recalls him saying. "Don't say that kind of stuff to him."
Cortana voice actress Cortana also has fared poorly while playing the game. But she has a secret weapon.
"I'm so terrible. I'm as bad as you could possibly be," she says. "So I make my husband play and smack talk everybody. If you think you're listening to someone who sounds kind of like Cortana, it might be Cortana."
