Despite his work on Metal Gear Solid series, Hideo Kojima doesn't want to be in charge of making the Death Stranding movie - but he does plan to be involved

So far, it seems Kojima isn't officially involved in the Death Stranding movie, but he says he has to be a producer (not writer or director) on the project

Throughout his career, there has always been a sense that Hideo Kojima really wanted to make movies rather than video games. After all, he’s the one who made a 1-hour+ cutscene at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4. However, it seems that he draws the line at actually making a movie. Though he is involved in the upcoming Death Stranding movie from A24, he is keen not to get in their way.

During an interview to promote the upcoming Death Stranding 2: On the Beach release, Hideo Kojima confirmed that he would like to be involved (but not too involved) in the Death Stranding movie adaptation in the works. “I think I will help produce it – I need to kind of guide the project – but I can’t direct it myself, schedule-wise,” he explained, implying that the film was early enough in pre-production that his role isn’t set in stone. “I made ‘Death Stranding’ as a game, so in order to turn it into a movie, it’ll be something totally different. But it’s my baby, so I would like to overlook the project.”

Kojima, who is known for being almost as passionate about movies as he is about video games, made it clear that this wouldn’t be a Hideo Kojima project. “I’m teaming up with A24 and Michael Sarnoski, so he will be writing and directing. I’ll let them work on it without too much of my input, because that might get in their way. I don’t want to go in and ask them to make a bunch of changes; that’s not cool. I have to trust these people, and I trust A24 and Michael.”

So contrary to the mounting evidence in the Metal Gear series, Hideo Kojima doesn’t want to make movies – just video game cutscenes that last as long as some movies.

You don't need to beat the game to prepare for the next one—here are all the major new and upcoming games coming our way.
