I didn't have a Kena: Bridge of Spirits sequel on my bingo card for the State of Play but I'm happy to be wrong

Kena: Scars of Kosmora got announced and looks bigger, grander, and just as gorgeous as the first game.

When Kena: Bridge of Spirits came out in 2021, it was rightly celebrated as the kind of action-platformer that we’d been missing. Though the game sold well upon release and got some (much-deserved) critical praise, it didn’t feel like the start of a franchise. However, I’m happy to be wrong as its sequel, Kena: Scars of Kosmora, was announced at the Sony State of Play last night with a release date of later this year.

The announcement trailer for Kena: Scars of Kosmora shows off a lot of what I already loved about the first game – the gorgeous art and the unique setting – and feels like it gives it a grander scale. Part of what held Kena: Bridge of Spirits back was the reliance on the hub environment and repetitive combat. While we didn’t get a great look at the combat of Scars of Kosmora, there is a sense that there is a bigger world to explore in this new title.

For me, this new trailer deepens the link between Kena and one of my favorite game series ever, Jak & Daxter; both games had very good but somewhat simple first entries and were followed by games that took the established formula and created a truly remarkable sequel. I don’t expect Kena: Scars of Kosmora to have nearly as dark a tone as Jak II, but already it feels like a bigger world, with more to do and a more mature story to tell.

Will Kena: Scars of Kosmora be a worthy sequel to one of the PS5’s better action platformers? We won’t have to wait long it is due out sometime in 2026.
