The Legends of Avantris gang want to tackle the urban noir genre next: "when, not if"
Legends of Avantris, the creators of hit folk horror campaign the Crooked Moon, teased a subgenre they'd love to see as part of their actual play series down the line

From folk horror to epic space opera, the TTRPG actual play series The Legends of Avantris has crossed into a multitude of popular genres. However, four years after the show first started streaming, the cast still have plenty of different stories they'd like to tackle. And at Pax Unplugged 2025, they were kind enough to share one particular subgenre they'd like to explore.
Specifically, the cast of Mikey Gilder, Kelsey Flynn, Richie Gilder, Derek Hudson, Mace Caffrey, and Andy Flynn were discussing the idea during the Avantris & Chill panel, a laid-back Q&A attended by fans from across the East Coast. And at one point, one fan asked the assembled crew what unexplored realm of storytelling they'd like to dip into.
"One genre I'd really like to touch that we haven't yet," answered Derek Hudson, "Is Urban Noir. That's the one that I've been craving. We've done a number of the Galtica series - some of you might have watched The Mighty Trunks - but those are very shenanigan-esque."
In case you don't know what Hudson's referring to here - "Galtica" is a setting within the Avantris-created world of Yona. The MIghty Trunks campaign referenced above and something called the Scuttlefish Sweepstakes, were mini-campaigns that took place within this setting, and both were... well, let's say less grim than you'd expect from the "urban noir" fantasy subgenre."
"But I would love to do one that's serious as a heart attack," continued Hudson. "I'd like to sit down and do a true proper [campaign] where the city is a character as much as the other PCs. That would be my dream."
So what are the chances of that dream coming true? Well, before the panel moved on to discuss other things, Hudson's fellow cast member Mikey Gilder said that the urban noir setting was an issue of "when, not if."
In other words, pour yourself a scotch and set your screens to Black & White, Avantris fans.
