Now that legendary vehicles can be commanders in Magic: The Gathering, the door is wide open for a Star Wars or Star Trek crossover
Magic: The Gathering's Edge of Eternities set is shaking up the rules of Commander. Is it to hint at an upcoming Universes Beyond set?

The upcoming Magic: The Gathering set, Edge of Eternities, is switching up the rules of Commander. In case you missed it, Edge of Eternities is an epic space opera-themed set. And what do you need to get around space, if you're not someone like Adam Warlock, zooming across the cosmos while Heart's Crazy On You plays in the background? That's right, you need a ride. A spacecraft, to be exact. As such, with Edge of Eternities, you can set a Spacecraft artifact as your deck's commander - or any other Legendary Vehicle, so long as they have power/toughness numbers printed.
If you ask me, that's a whole new world of possibilities that has just been opened. And as gorgeous as Edge of Eternities is from a design standpoint, I can't help but wonder if this change in Commander rules is opening up the possibility of a Universes Beyond crossover set with Star Trek or Star Wars. After all, there has already been a Magic: The Gathering Marvel Universes Beyond set, and the recent Final Fantasy crossover has become the best-selling MTG set of all time, period.
As someone who has willingly lost hours of his life poring over the ship options in the Star Trek TTRPG, Wizards of the Coast would be remiss not to pursue a Trek crossover, at the very least. Aside from Starfleet ships, of which there are scores across various time periods, you've also got neat vessels like Romulan warbirds and Klingon birds of prey. You've got stations like Deep Space 9. I'd buy the hell out of a USS Cerritos card, depicting the ship from Star Trek: Lower Decks - especially if it was my commander.
Both Star Trek and Star Wars have elements of exploration in their stories, Trek especially, which melds well with the expansiveness of the multiverse in Magic: The Gathering. I won't pretend to know how far in advance these Universes Beyond sets are planned. And given how long it took for the team at Wizards of the Coast to design the Final Fantasy set, I wouldn't want a Trek or Star Wars crossover set in my hands as soon as humanly possible. Good things come to those who wait, and I am happy to wait.
Until then, there's always the existing Star Wars TCG, Star Wars Unlimited.
