Prepare for a new kind of Chocobo Racing that even Post Malone might play, as the Golden Chocobo will be the ultra-rare card in the upcoming Magic: The Gathering - Final Fantasy set

There are said to be only 77 Golden Chocobo cards in existence. If you find one, let me know.

Chalk this up to things that make you go 'Kweh!' - as in, the call of a tamed Chocobo from beloved video game series Final Fantasy.

Wizards of the Coast has revealed that they are producing a limited edition 'Gold Chocobo' version of an upcoming card from the Magic: The Gathering - Final Fantasy set that will be quite the prize for those that find it. While not made out of literal gold (although that would be cool too), the 'Gold Chocobo' version of the Traveling Chocobo card will be limited to just 77 copies - with each one individually numbered.

(Of course, there will be non-limited edition versions of the card as well for MTG players, and general Chocobo lovers, like myself).

The 77 'Golden Chocobo' cards will be randomly inserted into the English-language Collector Booster packs of the upcoming MTG - FF set, with those of us that crack a pack and find one bound to let out various exclamations including the call of a tamed Chocobo ('Kweh!') or even a feral one ('Wark!').

Why 77? A Wizards of the Coast spokesperson says to honor the most popular FF game to date, Final Fantasy VII. In that case, making it a limited edition of 7 would be more on-brand - but a the same time, 77 gives more of us a chance to find one. Well, slightly more of a chance.

Wizards of the Coast began doing serialized cards in 2022 and have done limited edition runs of up to 900, with the most popular being a variant of The One Ring printed in Elvish from the 2023 Lord of the Rings set. That particular card had an ultra-limited print run of one, just like the One Ring itself. The card was subject to a global chase, with it eventually being found by a Canadian man in a deck and famously sold to rapper and MTG enthusiast Post Malone for somewhere north of $2 million dollars.

While I doubt one of the 77 copies of the 'Golden Chocobo' edition of the Traveling Chocobo card will be valued at that level, I'm always down to being proven wrong.

Magic: The Gathering - Final Fantasy for MTG Arena will be available for Arena pre-order on May 10, with the physical cards (and decks) having a global in-store pre-release on June 6. The general global release of MTG - Final Fantasy will follow on June 10.

Here's how to play all the Final Fantasy games in order.
