The cast of Metal Gear Solid share their favorite lines from the videogame series
One of the Metal Gear Solid cast has a favorite dialogue exchange that didn't even make it into the games - but almost did, thanks to a language barrier problem

We’ve all got our favorite lines from video games, but it is a bit different when you’ve actually performed those lines yourself. The Metal Gear Solid cast shared some of their iconic lines from the series while they were at New York Comic Con 2025, which ran the gamut from the hilarious to the mournful to the wonderfully bizarre.
During the Behind the Codec – The Voice of Metal Gear Solid panel at New York Comic Con 2025, I asked the voice actors to share some of the lines that have stuck with them over the years. Christopher Randolph, the voice of Octacon in Metal Gear Solid, shared his favorite line from the game first. “For me, and everyone always asks me to do it, but it's, ‘Do you think that love can bloom even on a battlefield?’ And it’s so interesting because never in a million years would I have picked that line to be the one that sort of captivates everyone’s imagination. But it really does. It’s great.”
Tasia Valenza, the voice of Sniper Wolf, had a similarly deep line to share. “I’m particularly taken with the line, ‘Hero, set me free.’ Because it’s painful. It’s kind of a beautiful line.”
Jennifer Hale, who has played Naomi Hunter in the series for years, got David Hayter to share her favorite line. “Well, my favorite thing is actually a story that David tells. Do you want to tell the story?” she asked him in front of the packed crowd, which pretty much guaranteed he would say yes.
“Sure,” Hayter began. “So, Metal Gear Solid 4, you know, Snake had advanced aging. So he was 35 but looked 70, and he was aging rapidly. And Doctor Naomi here, who I’ve had nothing but trouble with, says, ‘Let me examine you.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ve fallen for that before.’ So the scene is that I take off my sneaking suit, so I’m standing there naked. And her line is, ‘Oh… Snake…’ and naturally in the booth, I go, ‘Hey! Hey! Hey!’ and then she goes, ‘It’s so… shriveled.’ And that nearly ended up in the game because the Japanese engineers didn’t know it was a joke, so we had to be very careful about what we would record.”
But what about David Hayter himself? His favorite Solid Snake lines in Metal Gear Solid are the ones that are a little bit odd. “You must be a real threat in the Muktuk eating contest!” was one of his favorites. “You want to pull each other’s ears?” was another.
