Dead by Daylight game director praises Blumhouse's upcoming movie: "They absolutely get what we're trying to accomplish"

Game director Mathieu Côté has a message for Dead by Daylight fans - that movie you're looking forward to is in good hands with Blumhouse

Horror titan Blumhouse is in the business of video games now, in more way than one. You may recall Popverse's reporting on Blumhouse's very own game division, but don't forget that they're also still tackling some pretty huge video-game-to-film adaptations. Case in point, the Dead by Daylight film, which adapts the popular asymmetric horror game of the same name. That film was a topic that came up at PAX East 2025, and it was there that Popverse heard from an inside source that the studio knows exactly what they're doing.

That insider is Mathieu Côté, who has been the Dead by Daylight director since the game's inception. At PAX, Popverse had the chance to speak with Côté, going behind-the-scenes in regards to the game and the impressive franchise it's spawned. Of course, we weren't going to end the conversation without trying to hear a little about the upcoming Dead by Daylight film, first announced by Variety in 2023, and that's how we got Côté's thoughts on the partnership.

"It's been really cool," Côté says of working with the Paranormal Activity studio, "Because we've been working with them for a long time, for many different things. [The movie is] in the works with [James Wan's] Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, which are the perfect partners for something like that, and for us. They've been great and they're big fans, at least the people that we talk to over there. The major players are fans of the game. They absolutely get where we come from and what we're trying to accomplish, so it's been really nice."

Comforting as the news may be, it might not come as much of a surprise to fans of the other major horror game adaptation that Blumhouse has tackled, that being Five Nights at Freddy's. Interestingly, there's a little love triangle going on here, as the Dead by Daylight team have also been dealing with Freddy Fazbear and his creepy crew. An FNaF crossover is coming to Dead by Daylight (after previews at PAX East, by the way) for later this year.

What are we thinking, Blumhouse? You going to take that collab and throw it up on the big screen? 20th Century Studios are putting Alien and Predator back together in theaters soon, remember - if you've got a sneaky horror cinematic universe up those bloody sleeves of yours, best get to it.

You don't need to beat the game to prepare for the next one—here are all the major new and upcoming games coming our way.
