Nolan North says Uncharted is different from other video game franchises because Nathan Drake grows and ages unlike Super Mario or Lara Croft
Nathan Drake actor Nolan North says Uncharted allows its characters to grow and evolve, unlike other video games

One of the fun things about following a long-running franchise is seeing the characters grow and evolve. Spider-Man began as a high school student who was a social outcast, but modern comics portray him as a twentysomething with a healthy social life. Prestige television shows like Breaking Bad show us how characters like Walter White evolve, learn, and grow.
However, it’s rare to see a video game series do the same thing: What has Pac-Man learned in the past forty years? Has Super Mario gone through any significant life changes? Do those player skins from Fortnite even have personal lives?
According to Nathan Drake actor Nolan North, this is one of the reasons Uncharted breaks the mold. The action-adventure video game franchise has spent just as much time on character development as they do on gameplay.
“The great thing about these characters is that they are the very few game characters that were allowed to age with the actors,” Nolan North said during an Uncharted spotlight panel at C2E2 2026. “Mario doesn’t get older. Lara Croft didn’t. But Nate matured, like I matured. The thing is we did these games over 10 years. Two years per game, and there was a big break between 3 and 4 obviously, but we knew each other so well.”
“There’s something about the great writing from Amy Henning. And as the game went on she wrote to our voices, and the characters are very much who we are. I’ve never killed anyone…and been caught. But I think the maturity you see in those characters is just the stuff we had because, by then, I became a parent. She [points to his co-star Emily Rose] became a parent. We grew together as actors and characters at the same time.”
