Nearly ten years since it was first announced in 2015, World of Warcraft’s Legion expansion set is coming back into orbit with a brand new remix that will retool core elements of the game. This news was broken at PAX East 2025, but if you weren’t there, don’t worry, because I was.
Announced in 2015 and released a year later, Legion didn't just introduce the Broken Isles to WoW lore, it also brought in a new hero class known as Demon Hunters, while also raising the level cap from the previous limit of 100 to 110. The expansion was a hit both critically and commercially - which is one reason why it's being brought back in a newly remixed form.
If remixing something as huge as Legion sounds like a tall order to you, the development team at WoW knows this too. Jeremy Feasel acknowledged that “Legion has way more content than” its predecessor, Mists of Pandaria, and a challenge for the team has been finding a way to “integrat[e] all these systems in a remixed way.” Legion’s mythic keystones are going to be reimagined for the remix, although Feasel was mum about what that would actually look like.
Perhaps the most audacious thing the team revealed about the upcoming Legion remix is that they are introducing something called a “shattered timeline,” inspired by Diablo. The “shattered timeline” is an “increased difficulty world tier,” where “everything went worse and everything is way more difficult.” In a way, it’s fitting to announce something like a “shattered timeline” in the year 2025. Because it certainly FEELS like we’re living in one.
While the WoW team did not speak further about the Legion remix, they assured all of us at the panel that there will be lots more to come in the near future. So hold on to your butts.
