Updated August 3, 2022: On the heels of the recent Batgirl cancellation news, Deadline is reporting that Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to Todd Phillip's Joker, will be released on October 4, 2024, landing on the same month that the first Joker film debuted to massive critical and commercial success five years previous to that.

In June, Todd Phillips posted on Instagram a picture of a script titled Joker: Folie à Deux alongside an image of Oscar-winning Joaquin Phoenix reading what looks to be the same script.

Though no official deal has been reported, these social media posts seem to tease that a sequel to Todd Phillips' 2019 blockbuster hit Joker is in the works. The screenplay is dated May 18, 2022, and it is written by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the original Joker script. Folie à Deux is a French term which can be directly translated to 'folly of two.' It is used to referred to shared delusions or hallucinations, which can be transmitted from one person to another.

This could be taken to infer a second major player in this Joker film. The immediate speculation goes to Joker's most famous other, Batman. Bruce Wayne and his family were seeded in the first Joker film, but we would advise against seeing a Batman in every shadow.

In 2019, Todd Phillips' Joker became the highest-grossing R-rated film (and the first R-rated film to pass a billion dollars at the box office) of all time. It was a critical success as well, earning Joaquin Phoenix an Academy Award for Best Actor as well as a BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Though Joker was a success, it may not have seemed like an obvious choice for a sequel, as it was originally intended to be a standalone film. However, with the box office and critical success that followed the film, it isn't a surprise that the filmmakers and the studios are interested in returning to that well once more.

It will probably be a while before we are able to see Joker: Folie à Deux on the big screen, but fans of the original film at least have some hope that Phillips and Phoenix are working on something and that a sequel is seriously being considered.
