Martin Scorsese’s latest sweeping drama, Killers of the Flower Moon, is set to hit theaters in just a few weeks. Its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 garnered an impressive nine-minute standing ovation and glowing reviews, so it feels like Scorsese’s Western crime epic will be a surefire favorite of the judges come award season in 2024.

Killers of the Flower Moon is set to release on October 20 in the US and will once again team up Scorsese with two of his favorite actors. The movie marks the sixth time the director has worked with Leonardo DiCaprio and the tenth time he has directed Robert De Niro. DiCaprio, who has some of the most popular modern films in his back catalog, stars as Ernest Burkhart in 1920s Oklahoma as members of the Osage Native American tribe are being murdered under mysterious circumstances. The killings spark an investigation by the feds that includes legendary lawman Tom White (Jesse Plemons), with De Niro playing William King Hale, a political boss with a history of exploiting the tribe.

The plot of Killers of the Flower Moon is based on the real murders of the Osage tribe during the time, though we’ll have to wait until October 20 to see what kind of creative liberties the film takes with the actual historical events. According to Lily Gladstone, who plays Mollie Burkhart, current members of the Osage tribe had significant input into the movie and positively impacted the overall quality of the script.

The star-studded cast of Killers of the Flower Moon also includes Tantoo Cardinal, John Lithgow, and Brendan Fraser.
