Final Destination with superheroes: what Marvel's Madame Web movie could be

Columbia Pictures' upcoming Madame Web movie has been pegged by some as yet another Marvel superhero movie from a lesser brand a la Venom and Morbius. But now just days before the movie's release, I took a fresh look at all that's been said about the film, and I think we're missing what Madame Web actually could be.

It's Final Destination but with superpowers. Complete with that late '90s/early '00s vibe as we recall from the memorable (and memorably frightening) Final Destination movie.

'Slow down, Chris....'

The storyline and angle of Madame Web has seemingly been lost amid the fog of Marvel movie malaise we've all been suffering through, but when we take a simple look at what the trailers have shown and what the filmmakers have said - what we see is intriguing.

Let's take a look at what the filmmakers are saying - "It's a different kind of movie in that universe. Hopefully, it's almost in a way more a thriller," producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told Collider in June 2023. "It's not an action piece, because in a way her skillset is not conducive to an action piece, She can see - her clairvoyance is a very tricky skill set, so i think its going to differentiate itself but also be familiar to the audience in terms of the universe it's playing in."

Clairvoyance, and using it to avoid dangerous moments, is a key part of the marketed story of Madame Web - as it was, horrifically so, in 2000's Final Destination.

Sydney Sweeney, who plays Julia Cornwall (Julia Carpenter in the comics) as Spider-Woman, says the film will surprise people. “I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be,” she told Variety. “Quote that! That’s a quote, because the tabloids will pick up everything else we talk about."

Another thing that puts Madame Web closer to Final Destination is when it takes place. Final Destination was filmed in 1999 and released in 2000, and while Madame Web was filmed two decades later, it is set in the year 2003.

(Yes, this would make Dakota Johnson the Devon Sawa in all this.)
