13 years after first suggesting it, Andrew Garfield still believes in a gay Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield supports the idea of a gay Spider-Man, but don't think that that's a new idea.

The Amazing Spider-Man actor, who played Peter Parker three times (twice in his own universe, then once more in the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home), has been a supporter of a Peter Parker/Johnny Storm relationship - er, sorry, a Peter Parker same-sex relationship - for longer than his successor Tom Holland has been playing the same role.

The subject came up during an interview Garfield did with Entertainment Weekly ahead of his latest film, The Uprising. Or rather, the subject had originally come up all the way back in 2013, when The Amazing Spider-Man inquired to the outlet, "Why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?" Over a decade and three performances as Peter Parker later, Garfield's opinion on a gay Spider-Man remain the same, and for the same reason.

"That’s the point of why it’s such a kind of universally beloved character," the actor said, "One of the greatly beloved characters in the history of fiction is because you don’t see skin color, you don’t see gender, you don’t see sexuality. Anyone can project themselves into that suit... I like the idea of a place where everyone is being honored and everyone is being included, and it was just a kind of act of saying, ‘Well, why not?’ And you’ll be telling on yourself if you have a strong opinion either way."

Of course, Peter Parker has yet to be in gay relationship in the pages of Marvel Comics, much less the cinematic universes they've inspired. Still, if folks like Andrew Garfield continue working on the character, it shouldn't surprise anyone if the vision of a gay wallcrawler swings onto screen sometime down the line.
