Surprise! Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is making it to theaters after all... just not that many
Yes, it is cool that Paramount is giving the next chapter of the Avatar: The Last Airbender saga room on the big screen - but unless you live in NYC or LA, it's going to be very hard for you to catch it

Howdy, reader - we've got a little update for you here. You might recall Popverse reporting on Paramount deciding to release the next chapter of the Avatar: The Last Airbender saga - that is, the feature-length Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender film - a full two weeks earlier than was originally planned. You may also recall that the bummer of that announcement was that the film would be headed straight to streaming, and not get a theatrical run.
Well, the situation has changed in that regard... but not by much.
A Variety article published July 15 revealed that Paramount is now altering course slightly, by giving the sequel film a very limited theatrical run ahead of its streaming release. But before you get your hopes up here, Avatar fans, you should know that when we say limited, we mean limited. According to the outlet, there will only be big-screen showings of Avatar Aang for 7 days - that is, between July 24 and 30 - and only in two cities in America: those being New York and LA. Specifically, the screenings will happen three tomes a day for every aforementioned date at the AMC Burbank Town Center 6 and the AMC Empire 25, in LA and NYC respectively.
If you're wondering why Paramount would even bother putting the film in theaters for such a short run, well, it sure seems likely that it all boils down to the Oscars. According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences's rules, a film must be in theaters for at least a week in order to be up for an award, which in this case, would probably be in the region of Best Animated Feature.
I guess the good news is that, should Avatar Aang be successful on Hollywood's biggest night, it's a lot more likely that it and projects like it will get the movie theater treatment. Still, we wish the franchise's titantic popularity could've gotten it a longer theatrical run in the first place.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender arrives on Paramount+ July 25.
