Avengers: Doomsday directors declare that trailers are “stories” and “clues” for the next big MCU crossover movie

Marvel Studios seems to have been sharing a lot about Avengers: Doomsday already, but the Russo Brothers seem to be hinting that we need to look a bit deeper into what has been shown.

The marketing for Avengers: Doomsday has certainly begun in earnest now, with fans eating up four small teaser trailers featuring characters both from the MCU and who are being finally added to Marvel Studios canon after years of speculation. However, the Russo Brothers, who are directing Avengers: Doomsday, have said that the clips showing Steve Rogers, Thor, The X-Men, Black Panther, and The Thing aren’t necessarily clips – they’re something more mysterious.

It comes from a post on Instagram, where the Russo Brothers shared a clip that had been circulating online for a few days. The clip showed the current MCU Black Panther, Shuri, and King M’Baku meeting with Ben Grimm from the Fantastic Four, giving us our first glimpse that the universes have begun to collide and combine. The teaser also features a quick look at Namor and ends with the message “The Wakandans and The Fantastic Four Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday.”

This fourth teaser is the latest in Marvel’s attempts to build hype for Avengers: Doomsday, but the Russo Brothers had a specific message to share with this one. “What you’ve been watching for the last four weeks… are not teasers. Or trailers. They are stories. They are clues… Pay attention,” they wrote on Instagram, ending with the message #DoomsdayHasBegun for good measure.

Which has us wondering if we’ve been underthinking these clips. Are they actual scenes from Avengers: Doomsday or just short stories meant to set the stage? Both the Steve Rogers and Thor clips have a heavy emphasis on fatherhood, while the X-Men teaser showed a much more affectionate relationship between Charles Xavier and Magneto than we’ve seen in other X-Men films. This clip shows a meeting between two powerful families in the Marvel Universe: the Wakandan king M'Baku and the Fantastic Four. And how does the new countdown to Doomsday that Marvel Studios launched on YouTube factor in?

It certainly has our conspiracy senses tingling, trying to figure out what hints the Russos have apparently dropped on us without our realizing, but it is worth noting that the directors aren’t above flat-out lying to fans in trailers. We still remember the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War that was full of misdirection. So maybe they want to hide the plot of Avengers: Doomsday right under our noses without sacrificing the inevitable marketing hype that an Avengers film demands.
