It’s been a couple months since original Blade trilogy writer David Goyer invited Marvel to give him a call to help its stalled reboot come to fruition. The writer, who's also worked on Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, as well as 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice isn't sitting around waiting, however — turns out, Marvel had already turned down his advances before he made the comment publicly.
“It’s so funny, about eight months ago — when, not the latest hiccup hit, but like the prior hiccup — I had so many people that would say to me, ‘Dude, would you get in there on Blade? Would you just get in there?,’ whether it be friends or fans or people on social media,” Goyer told Variety in a recent interview. (That would have been when Marvel pulled the movie off its release schedule altogether, if our math is correct.) “And I wasn’t even really thinking about it, but then I had my agent call Marvel and say, ‘Do you guys need any help?’"
As it turns out, Marvel wasn’t ready to accept that kind of offer at the time.
“They said, ‘We love you, but we think we’ve cracked it now, and we’re in a good place.’ And then the latest thing happened,” Goyer revealed. “And so no, they haven’t contacted me.”
The current status of the Blade feature is entirely unclear; the movie has been rumored to have been put on hold while Marvel concentrates on other projects, but Marvel Studios has not commented on such speculation… or any speculation about the movie at all. There are no less than five untitled Marvel movies scheduled for release between now and the end of 2028, and Blade could very possibly be one of those in some shape or form — but as things currently stand, the movie has no director attached.
Maybe it’s time for Marvel to reconsider David Goyer’s offer. After all, fans liked the last time they brought back an OG Blade player.
