Blue Beetle is "folded in, Indiana Jones style" to the new DCU says star

Xolo Maridueña says he is "the most humbled" that James Gunn called him back to play Blue Beetle in the DCU.

It can be tricky trying to figure out what is part of the new DCU that James Gunn and DC Studios have put together. Superman? Definitely. Peacemaker? Yes, but only certain parts. The Suicide Squad? No, unless it pertains to Peacemaker, apparently. One bit that is apparently coming to the new DCU continuity is Blue Beetle, which is being folded in “Indiana Jones-style.”

That is how Xolo Maridueña, who starred as Jaime Reyes in the 2023 Blue Beetle movie, explained it. “I mean, there’s never a guarantee with anything, bro. You know this, and stuff flips on a dime,” Maridueña said about his recently announced return in Superman: Man of Tomorrow. “It’s not always a merit-based system. There’s so much that’s out of my control. But I am just the most humbled to James [Gunn] and the greater DC team for folding us in, Indiana Jones-style, you know?”

Maridueña then went on to describe the moment he found out that he’d be back as Blue Beetle in the upcoming Superman sequel. While in Japan with friends, he suddenly had a phone call from the director. “I had to leave the room, and I came back, and I was like, ‘Off the record! Don’t tell anyone! But we’re coming back.’ And I’m so excited for people to see where Blue Beetle ends up.”

From seemingly hanging up his costume for good to making an appearance in Superman: Man of Tomorrow in 2027, Xolo Maridueña seems pretty glad that his days as Blue Beetle aren’t quite over yet.
