Marvel Studios thought Pedro Pascasl's 1960s accent in Fantastic Four: First Steps was a bit of a... stretch

Pascal wanted the MCU's Reed Richards to sound "very mid-Atlantic." The Fantastic Four: First Steps crew asked him to tone it down

I'm sorry, but you can't give Pedro Pascal a role and expect him not to commit to it 100%. I'm speaking specifically to Marvel Studios, who apparently had to "pull [Pascal] aside" (his words) during the filming of The Fantastic Four: First Steps and request that he not go so hard on the voice he had come up with for Mr. Fantastic, AKA Reed Richards.

Speaking to Vanity Fair about the upcoming MCU debut of Marvel's First Family, The Last of Us star revealed that he had developed a Mid-Atlantic accent for his character to match the film's retro-future 1960s setting. However, when he used the affectation on set, the filmmakers felt the need to curb the character we assume was being referred to as 'the world's smahtest man.'

"They had to keep on pulling me back," Pascal says, "From a very mid-Atlantic, early 60s kind of talk. They had a dialect coach that was sort of gonna to help us into that kind of dialect. And I took to it so well, they had to pull me aside [...] They were like, 'Talk more like yourself.'"

And here I thought the point of acting was to immerse yourself in a role, as The Mandalorian star has proven time and again that he has the ability to do.

"I had a hard time doing that," Pascal continues, "because I was so into the era, which for me, was something to step into so that it's different from what we've seen before. I think that what they've created is something that we haven't seen."

The Fantastic Four( or is that 'Foah?'): First Steps arrives in theaters July 25.

Consider this a meta post-credits scene for Marvel fans - the four key articles you need to read next to continue the thrills:

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. As Popverse's Staff Writer, he criss-crosses the pop culture landscape bringing you the news and opinions about the big things (and the next big things). In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
