First it was Jason Momoa as Lobo, now Henry Cavill...? James Gunn "would love" to cast the former Superman in his reborn DCU - and says they have discussed it
On the same day that Gunn told Cavill he was out as the Man of Steel, Superman director Gunn spoke to the actor about a (possible) place in the new DCU

DC Studios and the world in general have welcomed a new Superman, but that doesn't mean they should count the previous one out entirely. Or rather, it shouldn't be considered certain that the actor behind the previous Clark Kent, AKA Witcher star Henry Cavill, won't appear in an upcoming DCU movie, as the man behind Warner Bros. new cinematic universe has said he "would love" to cast Cavill in a future project.
The news comes out of a conversation that Superman director and DCU co-president James Gunn had with Josh Horowitz on the popular video podcast Happy, Sad, Confused. During the interview, Gunn recounted sitting down with Cavill, who played Superman in the now-finished DCEU, and informing him that he would no longer be playing the part once Warner Bros. transitioned into the new DCU.
"Peter [Safran, DCU co-chair] and I thought the right thing to do," says Gunn, "Is to sit down with [Cavill] and talk to him. And we sat down, we talked to him. He was an absolute gentleman, a great guy about it. He said, 'The only thing I ask is that I'm able to reveal it myself, as opposed to coming from you guys.' And I'm like, 'Of course.'"
Agreeing that Cavill is a "class act," Horowitz then posed the question of whether casting Cavill in a DCU movie one day would be "confusing."
"Absolutely not," Gunn exclaimed, "No, I talked to him about it on that day. No, I would I would love to put Henry in something."
For Henry Cavill fans, this will likely come as exciting news. Not only is there a possibility for Cavill to join the DCU at some point, but from the new cinematic universe's very beginnings, the actor was in conversation about it. And remember, loyal comic book movie viewer: this wouldn't even be the first time that a major DCEU player was brought over into the DCU as a different DC character. Ex-Aquaman Jason Mamoa is confirmed to appear as Lobo in 2026's Supergirl.
Superman is in theaters now. Supergirl comes to theaters June 26, 2026.
